1.Find the right social networks for you or your business. Here is a bit of a cheat sheet:

A. FacebookBuying: obviously! Some more notes on FB below.

B. InstagramBuying: Great for fashion, beauty, photography, retail, but really anything that you can                                       express visually.

C. TwitterBuying: Thought leaders, journalists, local businesses, bloggers - it’s important to note that                                 you are going to want to spend time on here, build a community.

D. LinkedIn:Buying Professional services.

E. YoutubeBuying: Anything under the sun, if you’re up for the task of creating video content.

F. Pinterest: Anything that translates visually, if you have a knack for design, it’s a plus. Also,                                  take advantage of their free tools like Rich Pins and “Pin it” button for your website!

G. Google+ : There are some really engaged active groups out there and it’s worth checking out                                 to see if there’s a community in your industry.

2.Create quality content - Too many businesses try to create content for every social media channel, but don’t really optimize it properly. I often see content that is created purely for the purpose of quantity and it’s pure garbage. What’s quality? Look for, and follow, accounts that inspire you. Look at users who are killing it. Model yours after them and make it your own style. Remember that other users aren’t interested in your ownpersonal narcissistic indulgences…they want to be entertained, inspired, or learn something new. Put yourself in their shoes and ask if the content you’re posting is useful in some way.

3.Engage with your community - Always respond to comments!!! ALWAYS! Even if it’s just with a heart emoji. If it’s on FB, it dramatically increases your reach, same on Instagram. There are a lot of theories on “Following Back”, but I say to be generous with who you follow back when you’re ramping up your social presence. Unless you’re Beyonce, it may be hard to get people to follow you without reciprication.

4.Learn the metrics and what they mean. Here is a good article on Social Media Examiner (the website looks cartoonish, but they are a legit awesome source for info in this industry!) to get you started: 10 Metrics to Track for Social Media Success

5.Cross-post whenever possible. If you post a blog post, you should tweet about it, share it on FB, Instagram, etc. Make it easy for others to share your posts and even go so far as to suggest it “repost please” - there is research that supports this being effective.

6.Use hashtags whenever possible. Follow industry hashtags and check them regularly. If you follow someone’s feed, and they have a lot of followers, and they do things like retweet or repost, use their branded hashtag if you post something they may be interested. Tag other users when appropriate, but don’t overdo it. There are some delicate etiquette rules to adhere to, so familiarize yourself with them.

7.The days of social media being a free marketing tool are kind of over. FB is a pay to play environment. Learn a little bit about how their ads are set up before paying money to advertise - for example, boosting a post is pretty much never the best option. If you do choose to advertise on FB, it is potentially the best ROI out there, but you have to do it right.

8.Be consistent! Don’t post five times in a day and then not again for two weeks. That’s annoying. Figure out a reasonable cadence that is appropriate for the social channel.

9.ALWAYS BE TESTING!!! Social media is amazing in it’s ability to reflect metrics in real time. Pay attention, experiment, see what works and you will improve. It’s a slow burn, but it does pay off.

Best of luck to you!
